As a Home user or Home Office user, it isn’t always require a physical Fax machine to use Fax Communication. In fact you can make your pc to sent and receive faxes. This article will show you how to get it up and running until you have sent your first fax.
However, this is not limitting Business (small) user from implementing it on their site. There is no harm to do so but only do it if it meets your business needs.

Requirements

• 56K Modem (internal or external) supports voice/fax/data
• RJ11 Cable (should be included with modem package)
• PC with Windows 2000/XP
• Windows Operating System CD

Assumptions

• You know how to install hardware driver

Step-by-step instructions

In this instruction I will be using Windows XP Professoinal version for walking you through some screenshots to visually illustrate.

Installing Modem

1. Connect phone line to the modem Phone slot
2. Connect RJ11 Cable from modem Line slot back to your phone, so you can use your phone when the modem is not occupied
3. Shutdown (power off) your PC
4. Connect the Modem to your PC with cables provided
5. Restart your PC
6. Now your windows should recognise there’s a new hardware attaches to your PC, it might be installing the modem drive for you (only selected brands/models) depends on which brand/model of your Modem.
7. If Windows could not install driver, you will need to install the driver first using CD supplied in Modem package.

Installing Windows Fax Services

1. Insert Windows CD in CD-ROM drive
2. Click Start
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double click Add Remove Programs
5. When Add Remove Programs windows appear click on Add/Remove Windows Components
   
6. Windows Component Wizard will appear
7. Tick Fax Services box
   
8. Click Next
9. Windows Fax Services will be installed
10. Click Finish to close the wizard

Sending your first Fax

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Fax
2. Click Fax Console
3. For the first time use, it will ask you to do initial Fax Configuration
4. Enter required/optional information until Wizard completed
5. Fax Console window will appear
   
6. Click File > Send a Fax…
7. Follow the wizard for sending Fax. You should always preview your fax before it is sent.
8. Once the wizard completed, modem will dial the destination number and sent your fax out.

Receiving your first Fax

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Fax
2. Click Fax Console
3. Click File > Receive a Fax now…
4. If someone sending you a fax, your modem should give a connecting tone
5. Received faxes will be in Inbox folder
